Waldorf School Visit (2011)

“You’re just in time to cut up the shapes of the cookies!”
— another in an ongoing series entitled “the first thing the kid says to me when I get home from work”

We visited the annual Waldorf School Holday Faire yesterday, something we also did in 2009 and 2010. A few words and pictures:

Daddy (from kitchen): “Hi, kid.”
Lucy (sniffing air): “Hi.” (excitedly) “Did you make fried rice w/ bacon?”
Daddy: “No, but I made chicken. Would you like some?”
Lucy: (disappointed) “Yes, if it isn’t weird chicken!”

Every year, the Waldorf school in Los Altos has a holiday fair. We checked it out last year for the first time. I remember Lucy being very excited because it was her first visit to a real school. The kid is a year older now, a year closer to school. She’s still pretty stoked about going to school, so that’s a very good thing.

Like last year, the fair had a good turnout with lots of families, lots of kids running about. This year Lucy got a chance to do the following:

  • decorate cookies
  • meet a pirate
  • make a doll
  • visit gnomeland
  • play the drums
  • play lots of games
  • and lots of other fun stuff!

Check out the above video to see Lucy at the fair.

Note: I got a chance to use my Zoom H1 microphone for this video. Below is a pic of how it looked plugged into my camcorder. It worked out pretty well. However, one important thing I learned while making this video: it definitely needs a windscreen for outside use on windy days!

Making a Doll

I made my first doll for madame tonight (this morning?!) It was a great deal of fun, and I put a lot of love into this dolly. I hope she lasts til Lucy has babies.

She was from a waldorf doll kit, so basically everything was done, I just had to sew her head to her body, stuff her a bit more, and close the arm seams.  I have a new level of respect for dollmakers…even this little bit was a lot of work, and took me a few hours. I can’t imagine making her from scratch.

Here are some pics I took while I was putting her together…

Waldorf School

Yesterday we visited a holiday faire at a Waldorf school. Lucy was very excited about the visit, exclaiming, “I’m going to school—like a big girl!” The place was packed with kids and parental units, and there were lots of activities.

In between gnome adventures and cookie forest explorations, Lucy got to:

  • decorate cookies
  • dance to a live band (and crowd)
  • walk a rickety bridge
  • play in a fort
  • make “bird nests” with her mommy
  • run, run, run (and play) for most of the day

The school was pretty neat. We talked a bit to some of the teachers and were also able to see some really creative student projects. Lucy had a great time. It was an ideal way for her to experience her “first day” at school, though she currently thinks your average school day is equal parts cookie decorating, running, dancing, and exploring.
