A New Garden

Yesterday we wanted to get in a little outdoors wandering before the rain started up again.  It was a bit late in the day for Filoli so we went to the lovely Elizabeth Gamble garden instead. It feels a bit like a mini Filoli.

The main difference that is completely unlike Filoli is the traffic noise…it is surrounded on all sides by busy streets. I would guess it hasn’t always been so, and it must have been a most tranquil spot when Elizabeth Gamble first lived here.

The grounds have a vegetable garden area where elementary school kids have been allowed to plant,  gorgeous rows of flowers, and several secret nooks with water fountains in them. By far madame’s favorite part of this garden is the rabbit topiary.

Afterwards we stopped at a local patisserie for a macaron and next door got a really giant balloon…alas it popped as soon as it got home.
Today it’s expected to rain all day, so we will stay indoors and dry…and probably make chicken soup and pumpkin bread. Fall is here!

Flying a Kite

Last week we had our first adventure in kite flying, on a big hill overlooking the valley. Madame was a natural!

The weather was warm, wind was blustery, and the view was spectacular…you could even see the water of the bay and the hills in the distance. What a perfect day.

Two Days at the Oval

2009.10_0024

Above are a few pictures taken at the Stanford Oval on two different dates. The pics on the left were taken just a couple of weeks ago, on October 9, 2009. The pics on the right were snapped on May 23, 2008. 504 days sure makes a big difference, eh?

This is a big reason why I like working on this blog, to help capture moments that would otherwise just fade away from my mushy memory or go MIA in some Flickr account.

Over the past three years, Jill and I have taken lots of pictures and videos, each of them feeble attempts at trying to hold onto moments we’ve no doubt will eventually be referred to as “the good times” in the not too distant future.

This blog does its job by helping us provide context to some of those moments. We have 350+ posts right now and I’m already treasuring the ability to go back and catch a glimpse of that great trip, that big milestone in the kid’s development, that special comment.

This lends me the inspiration to keep plugging away. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to look back at ten, twenty years of thoughts and memories from friends and family? Wouldn’t it be cool for this thing to still be around when Lucy is old enough to make posts? We hope to find out.

Fall is here

Fall is here…you can feel it in the cooler air, see it in the turning leaves.

Today Lucy and I picked some pumpkins…

after an afternoon scavenging acorns.

A Walk in the Oval

A Walk in the Oval from Mike C on Vimeo.

Jill took this quick one minute video of the kid bouncing around at the Stanford Oval on Friday. Something about it really got to me.

Maybe it’s just seeing Lucy running around such a wide open, beautiful space with so much glee and promise. The wind in the mic, the kid trying to soak up and experience as much as she can, running forward as fast as she can (w/ no visible adult holding her hand/slowing her down), her mom looking out for her. It’s pretty neat.
