The Curl

Lucy’s hair is now long enough that she has curls, and happens to have one in the middle of her forehead!

When I was little my parents oft quoted these lines to me:

There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

I thought the lines were from one of my mom’s favorite books, Good Little Bad Little Girl by Esther and Eloise Wilkin. So last year I dug up a copy of that out of print book for her:

…only to find, nope, that wasn’t the source of those lines. Turns out it was Longfellow. So far we have not seen anything horrid from our little girl (fingers crossed!)….

Oh, and we are often asked where she got curly hair…the answer is, from me of course!

And I got it from this guy…

…her grandfather.

SF Trip (Partially) in Black and White

Here’s a video of our time in SF yesterday with Auntie Laura, Gpa Tom, Gma Karen, and a few four-legged friends. I made some of the video black and white after watching a bit of some Oasis documentary tour film this morning that reminded me how striking high contrast B&W can look.

Mix in a little slow-mo in the right spots and even a two year old can look pretty cool!

Luau

Lucy, Auntie, Uncle, Gpa, Daddy and Mommy all went to an authentic luau at the Kona Village Resort on Friday night. It was a great way to spend our last night on the big island before we head over to Oahu.

There were songs and dances and great food. Lucy wasn’t scared of the dancers, even the rather intimidating Maori warriors, she was only a little scared between dances when it was dark. She loved the drum beats and even swayed along with the hulas, and clapped for every dance. There was also a keiki dance, put on by all the kids who attended the luau. Lucy was a bit young to join in, maybe next time!

Hard to get pics at night, but here are some of the better ones.

Around the Island in a Day

On New Year’s Day, knowing that we wanted to view some volcano/lava action, Gpa Peter, Jill, Lucy, and I set out for a drive around the island. During our trip we made sure to stop off at Tex’s in Honoka’a for food and tried out the malasadas.

I was looking forward to checking out BJ Penn’s gym in Hilo. Alas, the place was closed, so we had to make do with peering through the windows. Lucy would have to show off her BJJ moves next time, I guess.

The actual drive was pretty cool. We saw all sorts of weather, from pristine blue skies to fog-shrouded mountain tops (the kinda stuff that would look at home on a Led Zeppelin album cover) to heavy, “why can’t these windshield wipers go faster?!” rain storms.

The kid showed no fear during our trip, even while spelunking through lava tubes.

Some of the lava formations were especially intriguing. Away from the ocean and people, their dead silent surroundings gave them an otherworld quality that was way cool. I felt like I was in an old Star Trek episode and that a Gorn could pop out at any moment!

Hawaii Trip: First Plane Ride

First Plane Trip
Lucy had her first plane trip yesterday, a 5+ hour flight (plus a connection!) and she came through with flying colors. I made a quick collage of pics (above) of this historic occasion. In the bottom right pic you can see Lucy’s “brave face”. She’d sport this look and clasp her hands together whenever the plane ride got a little bumpy. She’s a brave little trooper, that kid.

We’re about to hit the road and get caught up with her Gpa Peter, Auntie Laura, and Uncle John, so I’ll cut this post short for now. More pics and posts to come from the big island of Hawai`i.

Our Hawaii Pics.

Late Fall Beach Day

It was unseasonably warm this week, so we took advantage of it and went to the beach with Gpa. It was balmy and about 80 degrees, a perfect day.

The tide was way out, it uncovered some rocky tide pools we had not had access to before. Lucy loved it!

She splashed in the pools and got all sandy. We watched the waves, the doggies, the golfers on the cliffs, and saw the sun start to go down. We all wished Gma could have been there, she would have loved it!

Here’s a video from last month of Lucy taking her Gpa Tom to one of her favorite places, the park. It’s our first HD video post. You can view the HD version at Vimeo.
