Planting a garden

Lucy had all her plants and seeds and supplies from the garden center, and was ready to plant her garden. But she needed a little help.

So we invited Auntie and Uncle to come down last weekend to help. Auntie brought some pots and tools, and lots of know-how to get Lucy started.

It was a lot of fun, fairly messy, and afterwards we had lots of new pots of plants and seeds. Thanks Auntie for all your help!

p.s. … Lucy is sorry for squirting you in the ear!

Garden Center

Lucy and I went to the garden center to get some plants to start our own little garden.

She had lots of fun there, and even picked up some ladybugs for Grandma’s garden…we released them at Gma’s in the evening.

And of course she loved meeting the store’s resident cat!

Planting Flowers

This weekend it was very hot in the valley, mid-90′s, so we went up to the cooler city to visit Auntie. Lucy helped Auntie plant some flowers…

These marigolds reminded us of the inchworm song. Didn’t see an inchworm, but Lucy, ever alert for ladybugs, found one who actually walked across her finger!

We also saw worms, slugs, bees, a few other exciting bugs…and Auntie made a rainbow!

In Gma’s Garden – Summer Edition

Lucy visited her Gma Vita this weekend, and was thrilled to be back in the garden again! Here are some pics of Gma’s garden in the summertime. More pics here.

She has some new vegetables blooming, the walnut tree is in full leaf, and there were even a few birds who stopped by to say hello.

No squirrels sighted, but we did get a good look inside the hole in the walnut tree. It looks a lot like somewhere a totoro might live…

You may remember our last post about Gma’s garden from the early spring, pics here.

Toddling through a Maze

Here’s a video Jill took of the kid toddling around Filoli. Yeah, I know, it’s not really a maze. However, whenever I see something that’s even slightly reminiscent of a maze, I immediately think of the maze from the movie version of The Shining.

Filoli in summer

Lucy and I have been to Filoli several times recently, once when Uncle P.D. (above) visited from the far east (coast), and just last week with Grandmommy and Auntie Laura (also above, posing with madame). We like to think of it as Lucy’s back yard.

There are loads and loads of pics of our adventures here and I’ve included but a smattering of the ‘gorgeousness and gorgeosity’ that is Filoli below. Check ‘em out!

In Grandma’s garden

Grandma Vita is always busy in her garden. Here are some of the plants and flowers that grow under Gma’s care.

A lot of her plants have stories, too. Like “that came from so-and-so’s garden,” “that was Uncle Charlie’s,” or “Sam (Jr.) built that.” The walnut tree was dug out by Uncle Charlie, who knew it wouldn’t grow if its trunk was buried. The deck was built by Uncle Charlie (with help from Sam Jr.). There is a lot of family history in her garden! More pics here.

Fun at Gma’s

We’ve been getting our place ready to sell, and Gma has been graciously hosting us at her place (even Wubert!) So during all the hustle and bustle of packing and moving and fixing and prepping, her home has been an oasis of calm.

Thanks to Gma’s generosity and kindness, we have felt at home right from the start. (There is nothing like coming home to the smell of fresh baked bread!) Even Wubie is starting to patrol the halls at night like he owns the place, and peeking in every nook and cranny.

Lucy loves hanging out with Gma, and helping her in the garden. The other day we rediscovered an old red wagon, that has entertained many a kid (including Hayley and Tyler), and Gma pulled Lucy around the yard in it. Well, every day since then, we’ve had to have wagon time!

When the weather is nice we also try to give Lucy outdoor meals (to save on cleanup, and the birds like it too.) Here she is having some rice with adobo sauce on it, and trying her mom’s macaroni and cheese too, just for good measure.

We shot lots of video of the wagon tours, so once Mike has his video editing computer up and running, we hope to have some video to add!

Thanks again Gma for welcoming us into your home, and for all your love and support!

Tiptoe through the tulips

It was another fine day at Filoli, so Lucy, G’Mommy and I went for a visit. The tulips are now in bloom, and Lucy got a chance to have a look around at ground level. We got a lot of video of this, so maybe Mike will Vimeo some of it at a later date….

Here she is under the watchful eye of GMommy, romping through the rose gardens.
