Time Capsule

This time last year…

We’ve been reminiscing a lot about what we were doing this time last year, right before Miss Lucy was born. Days and days of waiting, then finally it happened!

This is about the time (7 pm) we were driving to the hospital. Right before this we had been shopping at Albertsons, when my contractions began with a vengeance.

As soon as we got home from shopping, I realized it was time to go right back to the hospital!

Luckily, we blogged about it all last year:

Oy, They Grow Up Fast (#2)

Since we’re nearing the end of the year, I thought I’d post another batch of photos to illustrate how the kid has grown and changed over the last twelve months.

The first six pics (Jan – Jun) were originally published in a post entitled, Oy, They Grow Up Fast from June 8th, 2007.

GrandMommy

Gma kisses Lucy

Lucy’s GrandMommy (aka Jill’s Mommy) had to go into the hospital recently, and Lucy can’t wait for her to get better. Lucy has visited G’Mommy several times, and likes looking out of G’Mommy’s window and playing with all the things in her room.

However, last time, the doc told us babies were ‘personae non gratae,’ since other babies (not Lucy!) have a reputation for carrying lots of germs. (Even though we insisted Lucy lives in a bubble, and her mom strictly enforces a germ-free policy for visitors, the doc wouldn’t budge.)

Since she can’t visit in person, she has been visiting via video iChat, and today visited through the glass door, but it is not the same!

Lucy wants to hug and play with G’Mommy and get back to the way things were (as we all do). She doesn’t want G’mommy to feel sick; she wants her to be healthy and have lots of energy to keep up with “Miss Perpetual Motion” for a long time to come.

She made a list of reasons why GMommy is important and special and needs to get better as soon as possible.

here is Lucy’s list:

  • you were the one who knew how to rock me to sleep when I was a baby
  • you whisper secrets in my ears (“pss pss pss…I love you very much….pss pss pss…”)
  • I need to be spoiled in the manner to which I have become accustomed
  • you were the first person to hold me after I was born
  • you promised to take me to Beatrix Potter’s house in England
  • I have a big stack of books here I need you to read to me
  • I’m going to be 1 year old soon
  • I need more practice walking down the hall
  • look! I’m getting another tooth!
  • I want to snuggle, you’re warm
  • Wubert misses you too!
  • you walk me around on your shoulders and sing to me
  • my tummy needs tickling
  • Mommy couldn’t have learned to be a Mommy without you, and she still needs your help

Oh, there are so many reasons! I just want you to feel better and come play with me soon Grandmommy!

Love,

Lucy

Our Little Girl

01-2007

We’ve been noticing lately that ‘Our Little Baby’ is rapidly becoming ‘Our Little Girl.’ It’s amazing how much she can change in a few short months. And she will be one year old soon! Lucy is no longer the pudgy little baby, she is now getting tall and leaner. Her famous segments in non-bendy places are disappearing. She has a full head of (curly!) hair, and you can definitely see her neck.

She also can communicate quite well. She doesn’t talk per se, aside from saying "mam" and "da" when she feels like it, but does very clearly let us know when she likes something (she gurgles and trills) or doesn’t (a quick cry, or a piercing shriek if emphasis is needed.) She finds just about everything Daddy does funny (who doesn’t!) and even some things Mommy does (like making the animal sounds when we are reading her books.)

She is an excellent stander, even hands-free standing sometimes, or climbing up with something in each hand, adding to the difficulty factor. She wants to explore everything, naturally, and finds the same old shelves and rooms boring at times. Of course there is still a bit of obvious baby-tude left, like when she is lying down waving her feet in the air, we are reminded how short she actually is!

But so much she can now decide or have input on (e.g. what she wears, whether she wants to go potty, if she’s interested in a nap or a snack, to play with her books or to crawl furiously toward distant dangerous sharp things.) I find myself saying, ‘she’s smarter than me’ a lot, when she figures out something before I can successfully divert her. Which is actually comforting. I know that whatever she will do in life, she will do well. We look forward to the little girl, but just want to hold onto our little baby a bit longer.

8 months old!

carseat

Lucy turned 8 months old today, 9/11/07. That’s 2/3 of a year! Some of the exciting things that happened this month:

  • She outgrew her carseat, and got a spiffy new one (thanks Gma and Gpa J for the g.c.!)
  • She learned how to crawl forward. Fast. Now in the 10 seconds it takes Mommy to get a water from the kitchen, Lucy can crawl across the living room floor and halfway over the pillow border. The pillow border is also not really an obstacle anymore, more like a new play area.
  • She mastered sitting up. The ol’ triangle pose has proven to be her sitting up mechanism. Now when she wakes up (if I am not napping next to her) by the time I have run back into the room, she is sitting up. (Wubert sometimes races me there, and tries to cut me off at the pass. He may still hold the ‘cat who has never been stepped on’ title, but the ‘cat who has never been tripped over’ title is lost.)
  • Her hair is filling in, and she is no longer the butt of her Daddy’s bald jokes. Phew!
  • She takes up 1/3 to 1/2 of the bed, and gets diagonal so she can touch each parent while sleeping in the middle. Usually Daddy is the footrest.
  • She’ll nurse at Gma’s. This is a big difference, and welcome. It means we can stay at Gma’s more than an hour or two. Still won’t drink from a bottle though. She’s a smart one.

Am-Scray, August!

Dead End Kid

Another month has come and gone. Our August pics are available here. Notable events from the past month…

Regarding today’s pic: when I was a kid, I loved movies from the late 30′s to early 40′s, especially gangster flicks. Two favorites were Dead End and Angels With Dirty Faces, which in addition to starring Humphrey Bogart, also featured the Dead End Kids (later known as the Bowery Boys). Anyway, whenever Jill sticks a hat on Lucy and flips up the brim, I always think of Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, and the rest of the kids. That was the idea behind sticking the kid’s mug in the above “Angels” poster.
