Bookcases and Mouse Ears

“It’s crazy, that ceiling!”
— the kid provides commentary while we look at houses online

So, the girls and I put together a few bookcases last week. The kid was very helpful, passing out tools and nails.

Once we propped up the shiny new shelves, we immediately set about liberating various knickknacks and doodads from their confines out in the garage. The shelves were filled up in no time.

Unfortunately, once said knickknacks and doodads were scattered upon the shelves, Jill discovered a small engineering flaw in our bookcase design, a gap large enough to engulf unsuspecting doodads!

Before we could cover the gap up, it’d claimed its first victim: the girls’ prized Mickey Mouse ears! This was especially disconcerting since I’d already bolted all of the cases to the walls and each other.

Because we couldn’t just move the bookcases aside, I grabbed a trusty wire hanger and some string and cobbled together a type of fishing pole.

After a few frustrating near misses, I was able to ‘hook’ the ears and (very carefully) pull them up.

I can’t even describe the joy I felt when I pulled the ears off the hook with my bare hand!

Once I’d rescued the ears, I immediately remedied our gap situation with a piece of cardboard from the recycle bin…
