Favorite books
Lucy has a lot of favorite books. She loves to read, and be read to, and will insist on several readings before bed.
Here is her current top 10, not in any particular order, for a historical snapshot. (We hope to add her top 10 songs soon too, but that’s a whole other post.)
- “Milton.” Documented here, a book about a cat.
- “I am a Bunny.” A Richard Scarry book. She loves Richard Scarry (who doesn’t?). Her daddy will even give you a brief biography of the artist if you ask…or you can just read this wikipedia entry. This was one of her first faves, and now is making a comeback into regular rotation.
- Richard Scarry’s “Busy, Busy, World.” She especially likes the stories set in Paris, and likes to point out the baguettes. This is her mommy’s really old (non-Bowdlerized) version, this book is long out of print.

- “There’s a Hippo in my Bath!” This is a big hit, especially before/after a bath. Another fave by this illustrator, Akiko Hayashi, is “Aki and the Fox.” Both have been reissued in English under new titles (and undoubtedly, new text.)
- Richard Scarry’s “Best First Book Ever.” She will point out Mr. Frumble all over the book.
- “The Little Kitten.” We have almost every book in this Phoebe Dunn baby animal series. Great photos, she reads this one in the car a lot.
- “Animal Daddies and My Daddy.” Another fave by the same illustrator, Ilse-Margret Vogel, is “The Bear in the Boat.” She really likes pointing out the cats. Both are out of print, but hey, there’s always ebay.
- “My Neighbor Totoro.” The book of the movie. Sometimes we even read this while watching the movie!
- “My Goodnight Book.” Illustrated by Eloise Wilkin, we have a ton of Eloise Wilkin books, another fave is “Baby Listens.”
- “Percy, Polly and Pete.” By Clare Newberry. We also have her “Babette.” Both are stories about cats, need we say more?

It’s great that she likes books, but sometimes she can be a “read this book to me NOW” pampered bully. And if I don’t respons fast enough to her demand she’ll sometimes jab me w/ a (hardbound) book corner. Those things hurt!
